Recitals "Voice & fiddle and building New Ross"

Sat 25th May 7.00pm | Old Ground Hotel

This recital is an innovative collaboration of fiddle and voice by two very talented and respected performers. Daire Ó Breacáin, is a gifted fiddle player and member of Slide  and Lorcán MacMathúna, whose CD ‘Northern Lights’ is an exciting and unique work in which Traditional Irish music and Ireland’s oldest singing style, sean nós, is put in contrast to Scandinavian musical traditions and singing styles, will evoke feeling and passion with his unique style of singing.

For the past four years Daire and Lorcán have been redefining the terms for how the fiddle can combine with the voice in Irish music. Inspired by oral dance meters, medieval Irish poetry and a massive chain dance by the people of New Ross on the building of the town’s walls; they have defined new possibilities of rhythm and harmony in the partnership of voice and fiddle. Containing some recognisable tunes (such as Na Ceannabháin Bhána and Páidín Ó Rafairte) as well as a pile of new compositions their duet of voice and fiddle is, exciting, unexpected and refreshing. This is duet playing at its best.
